Pushups for Beginners: From Zero to Your First Full Pushup

The pushup progression: wall to floor

Every step trains the same movement, with more of your bodyweight as you go. This is the same ladder the PushUp Challenge Trainer uses.

StepHow to do itMove on when
1 · Wall pushupsHands on a wall at shoulder height, feet a step back, lower your chest to the wall12 in a row, then a few incline pushups
2 · Incline pushupsHands on a sturdy bench, table or kitchen counter; lower the surface over time12 in a row, then a few knee pushups
3 · Knee pushupsOn the floor from your knees, straight line from knees to head12 in a row, then a few full pushups
4 · Full pushupsFrom your toes, body in one straight lineBuild the reps from there

Pushup form: the cues that matter

How many should I start with?

Test yourself: one set of as many good reps as you can manage on the hardest variant you can do. Then train with sets of roughly half to two-thirds of that number, a few times a day or in one short session. For example, if you can do 8 incline pushups, do sets of 5. The goal is lots of good-quality reps without grinding to failure every time.

The Trainer's level 1 starts with five sets of just two or three wall pushups, so there's no starting point too low.

How often should beginners do pushups?

Short, frequent practice works well for a movement skill like the pushup: most days of the week, with rest days when you're sore. Pick a schedule you'll actually keep, such as weekdays only, and let a pushup tracker hold you to it. In PushUp Challenge, rest days on your schedule never break your streak.

Tracking your first 100

Log every set, even wall pushups. Watching your total go up is a big part of what keeps beginners going. The PushUp Challenge pushup counter counts wall, incline, knee and full pushups (or press-ups) the same way: one tap per set.

Questions

Why can't I do a single pushup?

A full pushup means pressing most of your bodyweight, and keeping your body rigid like a plank while you do it. If either your pressing strength or your core isn't there yet, you'll sag or stall. Easier variants train both with less load, which is why you start at the wall.

Are knee pushups real pushups?

They're a real step on the way. Knee pushups train the same muscles through the same movement with less of your bodyweight. Do them with a straight line from knees to head. Once you can do about 12 in a row, try a few full pushups.

How many pushups should a beginner do?

Start with a few sets of an easier version you can do with good form, stopping a rep or two before failure. For example, three to five sets of 5 wall or incline pushups. Add reps a little at a time as they get easier.
